Frock Fridays: Shabbat Shalom

This is one of those times when writing your blog posts in advance backfires: tomorrow night, a friend and I were supposed to go to a group dinner and discussion at Sixth and I, a Jewish community center here in DC that puts a fresh and relevant spin on spiritual and cultural programs, but we were notified a few days ago that the event had been cancelled.

I thought about calling to explain that I'd written a whole Frock Fridays post about what I wanted to wear for the evening in the hopes that they'd reschedule it, but that seemed a bit extreme.  And then I thought about totally rewriting today's post so you'd get something more topical, but I realized that was unnecessary, too, because it's actually applicable to almost every Jewish event I attend.

See, when I reach into my closet before heading out to mingle with other Jews, my choices are guided by two totally absurd thoughts.

1. I won't know anyone besides my one friend, and I'm already married.  Does it really matter what I look like?
2. It's a Jewish event.  I have to wear blue.  Bonus points if the outfit has white in it, too.

Oy.  Oy vey.  Oy gevalt!  (Or, if we want to get really emphatic, oy vey ist mir.)  It's downhill from here, isn't it?  It's only a matter of time until I become a Jewish mother...

  1. I love this! I worked for a kosher food distributor for awhile in college and all calls on Friday started Shabbat Shalom which was a hard habit to break when I changed jobs!

  2. There have been times where I have been very upset about having to change my plans just because I'd planned to blog about them and suddenly had no subject matter. Signs of a blogging addiction. :p

  5. I don't know... the Israeli flag? the color of my soul when I'm feeling guilty? my mother's lips when I'm not wearing a sweater though she thinks I should be and so she's cold for me?

  8. yes! though I don't know about the drapey armholes with a blazer... what do you think, fashionista?

  9. I'm not much of a blazer wear-er, so I'm not sure how that would work...I would think that, if your blazer isn't super fitted, there should be enough space for the extra drapey fabric without getting weird and bunchy.

I was curious about the blue as well - but nonetheless it's a great colour!

  13. Ooh, I like that dress! My Mum used to insist that "blue & green should never be seen" but I really like this combo!
