Frock Fridays: Friday Night Lights

Jon and I, as you might have guessed from the part of my post on Wednesday where I talked about how we prepared for marriage, have different tastes in TV shows.  Nothing makes me happier on a lazy night at home than zoning out in front of a rerun of Law and Order: SVU or CSI: Miami.  (Yes, I know that Miami's the worst of the bunch - but I love the soap opera.  Judge away!)  Jon hates cop shows.  When he walks into the room  and hears the dun dun, he turns right around and flees.  However, he's hooked on Breaking Bad and watched every episode ever of The Wire in an unbelievably small space of time.  Interestingly, he's also a card-carrying member of the cult of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  As you can imagine, it's sort of hard to find common ground.

When we have managed to come together on the couch, it's been over the strangest assortment of shows.  I was thrilled when we discovered Battlestar Galactica at the same time because it meant months of something to watch together, though I actually got bored halfway through the second season and lost interest, and we're both huge fans of Game of Thrones.  Jon resisted Downton Abbey for the longest time but finally caved, and a few years ago I gave in to the colossal pressure (from entirety of Great Britain, I'll have you know) to watch Doctor Who.  Buffy was his gateway drug for True Blood, thank goodness, and we also have bonded over our teenage memories of The OC.

(Quick side note for those of you who are interested in US/UK cultural and linguistic differences: what we in America call a "season" is called a "series" in the UK.  So when Downton Abbey starts again in a few weeks, they'll be on series four.  It took me the longest time to catch on to this!)

Anyway, the whole point of today's post is to say that I've found a new show for us to watch together from the beginning when he moves over to the States.  It's actually an old show that I never watched and finally, after pressure from my sister, lots of chatter on Twitter, and a reawakened love for Connie Britton because of Nashville, I'm jumping on the bandwagon.

Yes, dear readers, Jon and I are going to start watching Friday Night Lights.  The funny thing is that the show will be just as much a glimpse of another world for me as it will be for Jon; I didn't grow up in a football-saturated culture.  Sure, it exists around here - I sing "fight for old DC" as loudly the next native - but I totally missed out on the insanity of high school and college ball.  (I went to an all-girls' school and, while our brother school did have a football team, it wasn't nearly the same experience as I hear you get at other places whether you want to or not.  And then Columbia... well, the less said about Columbia football the better, probably.)  But I'm really excited to start watching Friday Night Lights and, in honor of the show and football season and the beginning of the school year, I've put together an appropriate outfit for a football game.

I mean, I hope it's appropriate!  I really have no idea.  I'd wear a Redskins jersey to a game at FedEx field, of course, but does this look right for a high school game?  Be honest.  From a Google Image search for "Tami Taylor" plus my memories of what I wore for the few boys' games I went to more than a decade ago, I think I could make this work for a Friday night under the lights!  Yea or nay?

  2. I found a small typo in your post: I think that you meant to say that Miami is the BEST series of CSI. No worries, you can update your post later :)

Also, Jon and I should talk BtVS someday. Did he read the season 8 comics? More importantly, did I just out myself?

  3. haha I love you. sometimes I pretend to be Horatio when I take off my sunglasses.

Jon could write an academic paper on the socio-cultural implications of Buffy and its popularity. You guys should DEFINITELY discuss.

  4. I grew up in a small town, so of course Friday night football was a big deal (even though our team was horrendous). I was in the marching band, so I had to go whether I wanted to or not, but I still had lots of great memories. And, speaking from experience, you nailed the friday-night-football look!

  5. Please update us on your Friday Night Lights viewing experience! I watched the whole series starting a year ago and it's now one of my favorite shows. I tell people that it will make them a better person (hope I'm not setting the bar too high!). You'll never regret a moment spent in Dillon, TX! And you will ask yourself "What would Tami Taylor do?" Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.

  6. I'm intrigued by your future thoughts on FNL... I'm halfway through season 2, and I am not on the bandwagon. I'm not quitting it (yet?) but I just click it on when I am scrolling through my Instant list and nothing else strikes my fancy. And while I'm not from a small town and my high school's football team was terrible, we did all go to the games, etc. But then, I thought Parenthood was boring and most of the Bravermans were quite unlikeable, so I'm clearly in the minority when it comes to popular shows.
Also... CSI. No. None of them. L&O, L&O:SVU, Criminal Minds, then the funny detective shows- Monk, Psych, Castle, even Bones (but it's gotten boring...). But no. No CSI.
My best friend in high school was Buffy obsessed. I was more of a Roswell girl. And by "more of", I mean I LOVED THAT SHOW SO HARD.

What about Firefly? Have y'all watched that? Is Jon a Whedonite or just a Buffy fan?

Oh, and girl. Your legs would be so cold sitting on those concrete stadium seats in that skirt! Put some thick tights in there. Even in GA. I promise.

  7. I love that outfit-- the shoes are amazing!

  8. I have shows that I watch with Joe (Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Homeland) and then shows I watch while he's at work (Parenthood, Downton, Greys.) I find it to be a good balance although he gets the shorter end of the stick as he rarely has the TV without me - I can only handle so much Top Gear!

Football isn't nearly as big of a thing in Canada. We have our own national league (CFL) with staunch supporters but the season is pretty short. Hockey is our thing (obviously) and what one wears to a rink is often covered by a large parka ;) I do, however, love those boots!

  9. Yay! I love this post. When Friday Night Lights was on the air, my husband always made fun of me because I would say without hesitation and constantly that it was the best show currently on television. It broke my heart constantly in so many good ways, if that makes sense. Eric and Tami are who I want to be. LOVE.

I was definitely into college football, but our high school football wasn't the same as it is in FNL. I went to all the games because I was a cheerleader, and a lot of friends would come to the games. However, we stunk. Everyone just wore whatever they wore to school--jeans and t-shirts or button down flannels or whatever was in at the time. Lots of fleeces when the weather got chilly. Still good memories. There's something in the air when you're 16 and showing up at game wondering if your crush will come or whatever. Pure nostalgia thinking back on it.

I think the outfit is good, and I want that bag.

  10. Season 2 was my least favorite season by far. It gets better in season 3. But I'm totally on the bandwagon so you might not want to take my word for it. ;)

  11. I always forget about Jon and Buffy!! God am I so glad you married him :)

  12. Yeah, I've heard ssn 2 was hurt by the writers' strike. But ssn 1 bored me so much I didn't watch any episodes for a few weeks when it ended... I'll keep trying, though, since people say it's so good! I gave Parenthood three seasons (binge watched on Netflix- no way I would have stuck with a broadcast airing timeline for that show!) and I like FNL more than that, so it's only fair!

  13. Actually Sam and all his lad mates loathe Dr. Who! They describe it as epitomising everything that's wrong with the BBC right now. But then again Sam's favourite show of all time is The West Wing, while I'd be on the Jon train and say Buffy! We started watching Game of Thrones because we both know lots of actors that are in it and now we are 100% hooked! It's our common ground tv series. xx

  14. Best show. Ever. Ok, maybe not, but definitely Top 5. It is so unbelievably great and will make you feel all of the feelings. Texas forever.

  15. After Season 1, it was a critical darling as they say, but the ratings weren't great, so the network pressured the writers to make things more "dramatic" which is why you get the terrible Tara/Landry storyline that is completely ridiculous and soooo stupid. Stick with it and it gets better, promise!

  16. Friday Night Lights is the best show, I love it. I may or may not have loved the name Lila because of that show.

  17. I've never watched Friday Night Lights but I feel like I would love it since I LOVE football. Rob and I are BIG fans of Suits, Homeland and Sons of Anarchy too, just some ideas ;)

  18. Friday Night Lights has been on my to-watch list for awhile now! Maybe I'll have to cave and finally watch it!

  19. Oo I love that bag - I'm a sucker for a nice leather messenger or satchel.

  20. bonus points for saying "stunk"

I remember that feeling from high school dances! so many butterflies when you walked into the auditorium. Sweaty palms now just remembering!

  21. haha yes the whole COLD thing does put a cramp in style :P

  22. haha the bar is already unattainable with this show - I'M SO PSYCHED TO GET INTO IT!

    ReplyDelete
  23. YES. thank you! coming from someone who KNOWS, that means a lot :)

  24. Of course you know I love this! I'm actually not too into the cop shows either. Love True Blood! Nick wasn't interested in Orange is the New Black but I watched it and it was great!

  25. You guys are going to love Friday Night Lights! Tami Taylor is one of my favorite characters ever.

  26. I 100% love this outfit and would totally wear it! Love those booties!!

  27. to me this is more college football than high school football - girls tend to get a bit "dressier" for college football games (by which I mean they wear clothes other than jeans and a t-shirt). back in high school my friends and I would all usually wear a school shirt and shorts/jeans, depending on the weather. you gotta wear something in your school colors, especially if you're planning to be in the student section. often accompanied by something ridiculous, like face paint.

also, I just caved to all the good reviews and started watching Friday Night Lights yesterday. it's one of those shows that I kept hearing about and hearing about and hearing about, but just never had time to watch.

  28. My husband and I are just finishing up season 4, and I have to agree - you feel all the feelings. So, so great!

    ReplyDelete
  29. That is fancier than anything I ever wore to high school football. (Admittedly, I was in a band uniform, but even then, that is FANCY.) School colors. Face paint.

Also, I think my tv tastes are a perfect blend between you and Jon. How do you not love Buffy? I worship at the altar of Joss Whedon.

  30. Buffy came on tv when I was being the bullied the most in middle school. It showed how there were other geeks out there and it (and Joss Whedon) will always have a place in my heart. Also, I can always, always watch Law & Order or CSI. They're just good escapist fun! I do have a love of Doctor Who, but I got addicted to that when I was at my most "homesick" for the UK...so it's quite tied into that. Love finding new good shows, but I'm still not sure about Friday Night Lights. Football? I just don't know if I could try it out.

  31. Really like that outfit (especially the bag, which looks similar to my current bag). My ex and I shared a love of the entire CSI & Law and Order franchises as well as Criminal Minds, Without a Trace and pretty much anything True Crime related. I used to stock-pile episodes of Greys Anatomy & House to watch when she was away and the kids were either at school or in bed as she refused to have them on. These days I am watching CSI/Law and Order SVU & CI and Criminal Minds re-runs + any new episodes as they hit the UK, NCIS, Once Upon a Time, Big Bang Theory, Suburgatory, New Girl, Revenge & Dr Who.
