Frock Fridays: To The Races

This is going to be one of those fantasy Frock Fridays, dear readers.  I've got a full weekend - on Saturday, I'm hitting up a yard sale and the Mt Pleasant farmers' market in the morning with Charlie and his godmother, Little B, plus the Flower Mart at the Cathedral in the afternoon and then a mini-renunion over drinks with my choir girls from high school; Sunday will be for Mom and apartment things, followed by dinner at my new place with some friends - but I will be living in a sundress and sandals for 48 hours straight.  You see that sort of thing from me all the time, so I thought it might be fun to try something else!  And what better, at this time of year, than an outfit for the races?

Okay, so I've never actually been to a horserace.  Actually, I actively don't want to go to one - not for the racing, anyway.  The horror stories about how some of the horses get injured are bad enough from far away, thank you very much.  But I do hear fabulous things about the atmosphere at the races - basically, it's an excuse to drink in the sun while wearing a pretty dress and a hat, surrounded by boys in suits!  I can totally get behind that.  With Foxfield last weekend, the Kentucky Derby this weekend, and a whole summer of Ascot and Polo in the Park (which isn't racing, I know, but it's horses nonetheless and it still calls for frocks and frills) ahead of us on the other side of the pond, let's imagine some fashion to match!

to the races

Appropriate, don't you think?  Well, it might be, if we're going off the scenes in My Fair Lady and Pretty Woman...

  1. I loved Foxfield when I was down at UVa. The people watching was as good as the race, if not better. It's like NASCAR for preppies! That, and the fashion was crazy. I don't think I've ever seen that many guys in pink oxford shirts in my life.

  2. I love the cut of that lace dress! I've been looking for a dress for a wedding and that's the sort of cut I've been looking at (maybe a little longer though...so many dresses I try on are just too dang short). Cute!

  8. That hat is FAR too tame for the Royal Ascot!! I am surprisingly taken by this new trend of lace, though... but not the shorts. This dress is lovely, although I'd take it in a mint or navy.

And I'm with you on the races. The party side of it sounds like a blast, but after all the injuries over the years, Eight Belles did me in. I've not watched a race (on tv... I've never been in person!) since.

  9. I'm going to check out their site and see. I'm 5'11" (and 3/4!) and on so many cocktail style dresses, the waist hits a little too high and the hemline wayyy too high. Not that I don't like my legs, but I don't want to look gangly!! Or be immodest hehe :) Not easy for us tall girls!

  10. I'm sure you know this, but Banana has good talls! the MOST frustrating is when the length is fine but the waist is in the wrong place - HATE that. good luck :)

  13. Lace dresses are always so pretty. I just love them! I don't think I'd want to go to a horse race either. I get sad just thinking about those poor horses!

  17. With the introduction of 1080p HD video recording, photographers now have the chance to move into the field
of film and experiment with a bevy of large-aperture lenses such as the 50L and 85L.
Obviously, there may be some changes in the images produced by the pre and
production run 5DIIIs. While recording, you can also change
the audio levels by using the touch wheel, so if the audio is
riding a little too high, you can change on the fly.

  19. That outfit would have been perfect for both Oaks (pink out!) and Derby! Very elegant. Some believe the bigger the hat the better, but it makes for a long day when you can't turn your head, lol!

    Cute choices!!!

  20. So it really is greater to decide a 5-8 mega pixel cam and pay out far more consideration to the
Nikon digital camera batteries in its place. Of course, choosing a camera body doesn't lock you into only using lenses by that manufacturer, as there are several good third-party lens makers producing quality lenses for both Canon and Nikon cameras. Nikon the digital camera giant has recently added one more exquisite DSLR camera to its latest camera family.

  21. ooh what's Oaks? I need a lesson on horseracing in this country - I know nothing!

  22. I was exactly like you about racing -- and still can't even watch movies where the horses are "hurt!" Anyway, Oaks is a big tradition in Louisville - it's the day before Derby and is a great way to experience Derby without the craziness. I'm new to L'ville and understand it used to be just locals but now is part of the weekend Derby experience. The pink is for cancer awareness and run for the Lillies (Derby is all about roses)! 23. I have NO idea how she walks in that scene - or how she sits down - without splitting the dress!
