Frock Fridays: Family Weekend

My closet in the new apartment is big.  Wait, let me qualify that; the bedroom closet, which is one of three not counting the pantry in my new apartment, is big.  This is so exciting after living in London, where they don't believe in storage space like Americans do, that I tell people about it all the time.  I drop it into conversation casually - you know, like, "Oh, yes, it is a beautiful day! And also my new apartment has three closets and a pantry."  Okay, maybe not so casually.  But it's exciting!  Anyway, the wonderful maintenance men in the building came by a few days ago to install the closet system I'd bought (because the whole space was bare except for some shelves on the far end) and I'm happy to say that now I'm entirely unpacked and put away from my move.

I'd done a really good job, if I do say so myself, at editing my wardrobe before I put everything into boxes.  Clothes that no longer fit or that weren't in good shape either went to Goodwill or the trash, as did anything I hadn't worn at all the previous season or that I knew I wouldn't wear in the year ahead.  In the end, I brought about 2/3 of my old closet into my new closet, and packing only clothes that I knew would be used productively (rather than just taking up space) felt both challenging and liberating.

Of course, almost every hanger in my closet belongs to a dress.  I live in frocks, if you couldn't tell from my Instagrams and the title of this weekly series, and I've preferred dresses since I was a little girl.  But I didn't realize until I put everything away this past week that I only have a handful of skirts - and that made me sad because skirts are fun too!  It makes sense; I gradually gained quite a lot of weight in the first four years after graduating college, and while you can work around that in dresses it's much harder to be flexible with skirts.  Even when I was buying larger sizes of dresses, they didn't make me feel as bad as buying larger sizes of skirts, and it was much easier to find bigger dresses that flattered than bigger skirts that did the same.  (Now you know why I haven't worn trousers or jeans much in the past few years...)

Over the past year I've lost a third of the weight I'd gained, and, now that I can see my wardrobe spread out in my beautiful new closet, I have decided it's time to reclaim the skirt! Tomorrow, Charlie and I are heading to our country house - also known as my parents' home in the suburbs - for Mothers Day, and this outfit would be perfect for a spring weekend with the family.  And hey, I now fit back into Reiss, so I might actually have to get this skirt!

  1. Super cute outfit! I don't know what it is about them, but I absolutely want those sandals! And your closet space. I'm closet space deprived. I tell my husband that he should never doubt that I really love him, because I gave him half of our closet and I could have easily filled the whole thing with just my shoes. :p Happy weekend!

  4. I cannot even begin to tell you how much I can relate! I'm on the upper register lately and need to take back my body and closet. I love skirts, especially my pencil skirts for work and I can't wait to get to a comfortable place again someday. As for the closet space, kudos! I know how hard it is to find good closet space, especially as a renter. I've had great spaces and horrible ones. I actually just updated my sandal selection for this spring since I didn't do any sandal shopping last year. I was too busy buying a new business wardrobe. Hello wedges and sandals season! (if the dang rain will go away...)

  7. Haha, 'our country house'- I LOVE it!!
And I am the same way in preferring dresses to skirts, but my reasoning is that dresses look more normal tucking in at a natural waist, and my lovely pudge is around my hips (ahem, thank you, bcp) so tucking a top into a skirt seems to accentuate that. Dresses are more forgiving. Plus I am nothing if not a lazy dresser, so putting one thing on and DONE is much easier than sorting and matching and hoping the top I want is clean, etc.!

Love this skirt. And it's 100% not my type. But I love it.

  10. duh. that's why I suggested that Mom buy this for the backyard http://www.amazon.com/One-Dog-Bone-Pool-ODOBBP01/dp/B0054SD38E it's really most appropriate for one's country retreat :P

you can love things that aren't your style! happens to me ALL the time. it's why I don't really take Jon shopping with me. he'll pick out something that I will love and that will look horrible on me, and I JUST CAN'T DEAL WITH IT. (he doesn't understand, obvi.)

  11. okay, I have to disagree with you here. skirts are SO much more flexible when it comes to fit! I feel like most women probably are not the same size throughout their body (I know I have that problem), which can cause a lot of issues in trying to find dresses that fit correctly.

  13. true! but for some reason dresses smooth it all out for me better and/or hide things better that I want hidden in a less obvious way? (see AT's comment below!)

  14. YES! the bit of torso between the bottom of your bust and the top of the waistband can be the most uncooperative area of a girl's body. I LOVE Loft and need an excuse to stop by again, so thank you for that :)

  15. I think that I would like those shoes immediately.

  16. I hate wearing skirts because I always feel like I have to wear a tighter fitting shirt to balance it out. But then that shows off my stomach, which is the one part of my body that I ever try to hide. Exactly what you said below: it's the roll between the underboobs and the top of the skirt that makes me want to scream. But good for you, rocking the new skirts. I didn't know you before you lost weight, but I'm so proud of you for really giving it your all and doing it!

  21. I love that you wear dresses all the time -- more women need to. I love that they're usually super comfy, yet I look dressed up at the same time. I'm not a fan of skirts though. Like Jackie mentioned, I feel the need to wear a tight fitting shirt, which I despise. Also, I'm so glad the weather's getting warmer... I don't wear dresses in the winter, so now I can break them out!

  28. Woo-Hoo!!! Closet space! As an American that has lived overseas for way too long, I believe that things like closet space should be celebrated! And the return of skirts, lets celebrate that too because that one is swish and perfect for spring :)

  29. haha thank you for acknowledging and reaffirming my excitement about the closet space thing!
