Can We Get A Round of Applause, Please?

A few weeks ago, I did an amazing thing - well, it was amazing for me - and tweeted about it.  It was one of those tweets that makes people who don't use social media feel really good about not using social media.  As I tweeted it, I could practically hear my dad asking, "but why does anyone care?"  But I got a ton of replies from people who all agreed that it was an amazing thing and that they felt amazing when they did it, too.  You want to know what it was?

I climbed the second longest escalator in the DC metro system.  That's right; I walked up all 212 feet of the escalator at the Bethesda station.

you know I don't use gifs often, so this is a big deal.

Dear readers, that's amazing.  But, when I got to the top, I wasn't greeted by a pep squad with tagboard posters and colorful pom poms and customized cheers.  I really think I should have been, don't you?  Actually, I know you do, because you tweeted back to me about it.  And that got me thinking... there are so many other things* like walking up escalators that we know we should do but rarely actually do do that, when we do do them, we feel we deserve a round of applause.  (Did you follow that?)  Here are my top five:

- not eating both servings of a meal when I make two (one to have for dinner that night and the other for lunch the next day)

- unsubscribing from mass emails instead of getting annoyed, deleting them, and telling myself that I'll unsubscribe next time

- drinking eight glasses of water in one day

- keeping a mini umbrella and a reusable bag in my purse at all times

- removing my make-up before I go to bed

*Just to clarify, this list is different from the list I keep of Grown Up Things I Do That I Really Want A Gold Star For Doing.  On that list are things like "setting the coffee-maker the night before" and "writing thank-you notes within a week of receiving presents" and "not waiting until every lightbulb in the apartment has died to buy more."  That list can be for another post, and I'll start taking suggestions for that one (or this one, if you have more ideas!) even though there's no way to beat the explanation of being a grown up on Hyperbole and a Half now.  Each comment will get a personalized ovation, I promise!

  2. "removing my make-up before I go to bed" I use to be SO BAD at this... and for awhile now, I've been doing it every. single. night (even though it takes me so much longer to get into bed... what is this cleanser, toner, moisturizer process?!)
even still though, i feel like i deserve a pat on the back. every time.

  6. Keeping a reusable bag in my purse (car for me) at all times. I am so proud of myself when I need a quick stop at the grocery, and I have a bag in my car. I always have bags when I do my main run, but for some reason it's so hard for me to remember to put a bag back in the car just in case. Of course my grocery does reward me with 5 cent discount per bag so that is a sort of pat on the back I guess.

Also, so so bad about not buying light bulbs. My husband and I recently went out and got light bulbs to replace at least one bulb PER room in our rental house that we're moving out of in a month! Why couldn't we just have light bulbs on hand to let us enjoy the light instead of the people moving in after us? I'll never know.

  8. Um, walking up the Bethesda escalator is completely tweet-worthy!! I've only done that a couple of times and wanted to die afterwards. Never again! I also had to walk up at Woodley Park in the dark when the power went out one night. Still waiting for my medal from WMATA...

  11. Not eating the extra portion and washing my face before bedtime are two things that I always applaud myself for. It's the little things :)

  12. I have never, ever understood the decision-making process of WMATA. Some of those escalators are absolutely ridiculous; you definitely deserve a round of applause (and probably a champagne toast) for walking to the top. Not eating both servings of a meal is the hardest thing ever for me! I usually make 3-4 servings, feel super smug about preparing lunch for the week, and then promptly eat more than I need and end up getting takeout tacos. Sigh.

  13. so I've figured out the trick - don't click on the email on your phone! because you're never going to unsubscribe on your phone. only click when you're on your computer ans can unsubscribe! magic :)

  17. there was an article on Apartment Therapy recently about the pros and cons of visiting big box stores (like Costco) when you live in a small place without much storage. I'm on the pro side - I'd much rather have stacks of light bulbs in every corner and not sit in the dark every other week! doesn't mean I'm prepared, but I do want to be... haha :)

  22. Of course I love that gif! I'm glad you included it :) I definitely feel like I deserve a cheer squad right now. I bought a pint of ice cream and made myself only enjoy half of it. VERY impressed.
