Worst Christmas Songs Ever

In 2010, I gave you Hark, Hear the Bells, a post of my top 15 popular Christmas songs.  You got Music for Christmas Eve in 2011, guest-written by my friend Christine, which listed her 10 favorite choral Christmas carols.  And this year - drumroll please - we're going to talk about the worst Christmas music out there.

Jezebel actually did this last year, but I've never heard of the winning song.  One of my three worst songs is on the above list, so apparently everyone else likes the others that I hate.  (What does that say about me?  More importantly, what does that say about America?  Discuss amongst yourselves.)  I'll explain to you why these are my least favorite Christmas songs, but feel free to disagree in the comments.  After all, it's Christmas - a classic time to argue with those we love about things of little consequence!
3. Okay, it's not really fair for O Holy Night to have made it into my top three.  But one of my high school groups sang at Christmas in Washington back in 2001, where Charlotte Church performed this song - and, in the rehearsal, she totally screwed up the words and then blamed the choirs for throwing her off.  Real classy, lady.  Thanks for ruining this one for me!

2. Carrie Underwood can do no wrong in my book - unless these rumors that she's been cast as Maria in a remake of The Sound of Music are true, in which case I'm going to need to do some serious soul-searching - but I cannot stand this song.  There's good treacle and there's bad treacle and there's a time and a place for each.  But Do You Hear What I Hear? makes me nauseated.

1. My very least favorite Christmas song ever in the whole world did make it onto Jezebel's list, though it was knocked out after the second round.  I have no rational reason for hating The Little Drummer Boy - I just do. It tells a pretty sweet story, but not even that scene in The West Wing or the Justin Bieber version can make me like it.  This is definitely a case of #sorryimnotsorry...

How about you, dear readers?  What do you think is the worst Christmas song of all time?  And it's okay; you can be honest about my taste in Christmas music.  I won't be too offended!

  1. There are quite a few songs on the New Kids On The Block Christmas album that I loved when I was 13 but in retrospect are pretty bad :)

  2. Christmas Shoes is awful. I'm trying to think of a song I hate for the song itself, not just for the singer. Because while I love O Holy Night when done well (also because for YEARS, I sang it at 7:30 Christmas morning services) there are way too many overwrought versions. I also dislike My Favorite Things as a Christmas song because it isn't a Christmas song!

I will be debating this all day.

  3. haha, oh my gosh - Christmas Shoes is the worst - I love how people play that song just to piss people off ;)

Love this roundup/idea - thanks for sharing love!

  4. Alex hates the "On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me..." song. Little did he know that I know all of the words to it all the way up to 12 drummers drumming!

Getting off the traditional track a bit, I can't stand The Darkness "Don't let the Bells End". Yes, laugh up the title, British people, but that is the most annoying song on this planet to me!!

  5. I refuse to believe that. it sounds awesome!

AND THAT IS NOT A CHRISTMAS SONG.

  8. I really have never even heard that song before! have I been living under a rock? or just hanging out with the right people? :P

  9. 1. i just argued with betsy herself about this, but the christmas shoes is pretty much the holiday equivalent of tim mcgraw's "don't take the girl" because for both of them, if i'm in a place where i cannot change the channel, i start to bawl like a child.
    2. "do you hear what i hear" is terrible UNLESS sung by the late and great whitney houston as she does on those "a very special christmas" CDs with the keith haring artwork on the cover.
    3. if betsy doesn't listen to "the christmas shoes" by the end of the day then the child will never get the shoes for his mom and christmas will be ruined.

  11. Rudolph + Blue Christmas are the two that I can. not. stand! Up until this year Drummer Boy was on that list, but something in me must have shifted because now I don't mind it too much! Thanks for giving me a chance to get this off my chest ;) xoxo! eliza

  12. Not going to lie, "Wonderful Christmas Time" grates my nerves every time I hear it!! I can't stand it. Also, DON'T LISTEN TO THE CHRISTMAS SHOES. DON'T DO IT. You will regret it!!!

  13. Christmas Shoes is way bad, but my #1 is that 'I want a hippopotamus for Christmas' It makes me want to rip my eardrums out of my head, lol.

  14. ugh, I cannot do drummer boy. at all. good choice

  15. I agree with #2, though I also love the Rosie O'Donnell/Elmo version.

  16. I don't know, Whitney... Liz says that I'll ruin CHristmas if I don't. can't handle the pressure!

  17. haha I don't even know what that song is. dare I YouTube it?

  18. that's a real thing? we're headed down a dark path here...

  19. I love, love, love Carrie Underwood, but she is not Maria. NO.

  20. Christmas Shoes is the WORST, hands down. Oh, it's BAD.

  21. I've never heard of this "Christmas Shoes" song, but on Jezebel's list I cringe and shudder at "Toyland", "All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth", "Nuttin' for Christmas"... and pretty much any pop star making a Christmas album ever.

But, then, I'm a curmudgeonly Grinch. Oh, and Hip Heavy Lip has a great version of that on my 99Xmas cds.

OHHHHHHH- BLUE CHRISTMAS by Porky Pig. That is the worst Christmas song ever in the history of Christmas and music. EVER. It makes me want to hit pedestrians.

  22. for the record, it's not a remake of the Sound of Music - it's a live performance being broadcast, like the stage show. people need to get their facts straight before they start hating. [can you tell I've been hearing a lot of people complain about this?]

holy goodness, there are SO MANY Christmas songs that drive me batty! they just get played over and over and over on the radio. I just don't even know where to start.

  23. re: Sound of Music - you are 100% right, but I have no idea why I'm resisting! I've seen a stage version of the musical and I liked it, so why can't I get my head around Carrie Underwood performing in the role? it's totally irrational of me!

  24. every pop star has to make a Christmas album! it's a rite of passage :)

  25. Hahaha! It's so funny you posted this today because I've been thinking about the difference between the UK and US traditional Christmas radio songs for a while now. There are plenty that I never heard until I spent Christmas here, and there are other that are just not on my American family's radar and that are perennial musts for me. Watch out soon, because I'm going to have to highlight them some point soon.

PS - the worst? Last Christmas. Always.

  26. For me it would either have to be All I want for Christmas is my 2 Front Teeth or Grandpa Caught Grandma Kissing Santa Claus! I've never heard of this Christmas Shoes song... sounds like it's probably a good thing! ;)

  27. I guess all the opposition is coming from the fact that Julie Andrews is so iconic as Maria in the movie version. I don't really have much of an opinion on Carrie Underwood playing the role; I think she has a fantastic voice, which hopefully means she'll do the musical justice. And I think when it comes to musicals that it's a lot more important to cast someone for vocal ability as opposed to acting ability - after all, the music is pretty much the most important character in any musical.

  28. oh, that reminds me! I HATE that "My Favorite Things" gets treated as a Christmas song! I'm really not a big fan of that song in general, but I especially hate that it gets played on the Christmas radio stations.

    ReplyDelete
  29. that's probably part of it. I often don't trust popular singers who crossover into musical theater - I guess I think they're doing it to appeal to a new audience and for "real" validation even if they're already huge stars? which is a totally elitist way of looking at it, I know, and not fair. I'll work on getting over it :/

  30. Too funny because not only is Little Drummer Boy my favorite Christmas song, but I was going to post about that scene in the West Wing.

    ReplyDelete
  31. wait... is Grandpa Caught Grandma Kissing Santa Clause like I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause? I don't know the first one!

    ReplyDelete
  32. oooh I LOVE Last Christmas! now THAT is good treacle :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. carrie underwood as maria in the sound of music? i don't think so. i just do.not.think.so. i love carrie underwood, but i just can't imagine her in that role. it'll be interesting to see if that's the way it ends up going.

my least favorite christmas song is probably 'grandma got run over by a reindeer.' no one in my family likes it, so i guess that counts as holiday tradition?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ahh now I understand why you don't like O Holy Night. That would have ruined it for me, too!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I can't stand Christmas Shoes! Worst song EVER! Why in the world would you write such a heartbreaking song for such a lovely time?!
I do love Little Drummer Boy though!

  36. I love reading all this a year later, after the stage version of The Sound of Music aired...
