The next morning, my routine was much the same as ever: I took Charlie for a short walk around the neighborhood in my PJs, made coffee, jumped in the shower, started to get dressed... and discovered that the crash we'd heard a few hours earlier had been the shelving collapsing in our bedroom closet.
Management has promised us that we'll have new shelving installed by the time we get back to DC on Thursday. On the one hand, it's great that we're out of town right now because it means maintenance can come and go without worrying about us (or about our intrusively helpful dog). On the other, management and maintenance have not always been on the ball for us when we've needed them to be, and this is one of the times when we'd really like them to deliver as my in-laws are coming to see our apartment in just a few days and I don't want them to walk into a federal disaster area.
Of course, my nesting/controlling side is having a minor panic at not being in the apartment to oversee the work; even though we're in a rental, I'd love to have some input on what's installed and where. I know the shelving won't be anything fancy, but I've been dreaming about Elfa systems and matching hangers that all face the same way and dresses organized first by formality, then by color, then by length.
This is probably diagnosable, isn't it? Oy vey.
Those nighttime crashes are so startling! A new closet sounds exciting but like you I have major anxiety about people milling about in my space when I am not there to direct them.
ReplyDeleteI've been working on our massive piles of laundry, which may or may not have resulted in all of Dan's shirts organized by type (t-shirts, long-sleeved dress shirts, short-sleeved collared shirts) and by color. All facing the same direction, naturally.
ReplyDeleteyikes! that happened to me once -- my curtain rod broke in the middle of the night and all my clothes came crashing down! not fun. ah well i dont blame you for wanting to fix it yourself! xo jillian - cornflake dreams
ReplyDeletecan I help?
ReplyDeleteThroughout high school I worked out Dillard's so it's drilled into my soul that all hangers must face the same way at all times. x
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately I know this sound well! One of the small shelves in our closet fell and it was quite scary at the time. That set up is gorgeous though. I'd love to have something like that!
ReplyDeleteI, too, am familiar with this crash, although the last time we heard it was in the laundry room, 2 nights ago. I dream of the day when we have a reasonable amount of closet space and figure that a functional, organized closet is the equivalent of my personal unicorn!

It was a similar crash that led us to our first makeover project for our townhouse - the storage unit in the closet had been sunk into drywall, not studs, so naturally, we put our clothes on it and the whole thing came tumbling down. Our current one is a lot sturdier, if homemade. I have very vivid daydreams about having a closet large enough to have California Closets come in and build me something beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen my closet since I had it redone last summer? :) It started with a crash, then all this money fell out of my bank account, but now everything is awesome.
ReplyDeleteThat was a lot of it! I JUST WANTED TO BE THERE. Even if in another room! AHHH LOSS OF CONTROL.
ReplyDeletehaha what a lucky man he is to have you :P
ReplyDeletewell, not FIX it myself... just oversee the fixing! haha
ReplyDeletetoooooo late. want a hanging shoe compartment thing? we now have an extra because the new shelving somehow has lots more shelves than before.
ReplyDeletecan you drill that into Jon's soul, please? haha
ReplyDeleteoh man me too! if I'd been really clever, I would have painted the back wall of the closet before they installed the new stuff...
ReplyDeleteoh no that's the worst! is it all sorted now? KEEP REACHING FOR THAT UNICORN.
ReplyDeleteoh no! I had no idea this happened so often. what a nightmare!
ReplyDeleteno! I hope you have no more falling (closet falling or money falling) for a long time :)
