In My Life In Ten Years

While scrolling through Twitter yesterday, I noticed that Helene is hosting a Blog Every Day In October linkup.  Today's prompt is to write a letter to yourself in ten years, and I originally planned to get really deep and philosophical about it.  (I even rifled through my bookcase for my copy of À la recherche du temps perdu from college.  It wasn't there, for which we can all be grateful.)  It's possible I was overthinking my post, because I found myself at a total loss when I sat down to actually write the letter.

After all, who knows where I'll be in ten years?  I'm actually not so different now from who I thought a decade ago I might be at 28, but becoming that person mostly stemmed from choices I alone made.  The next ten years will be full of decisions that Jon and I arrive at together, and we haven't yet delved into the specifics of a lot of where and who we want to be when.  I mean, we're on the same page in an abstract sense, but we don't have a clear two - or five- or ten-year plan.  (Jon, to be honest, isn't big on that sort of thing.  I am.  This is going to be fun.)  So what can I tell myself in ten years, knowing only that I'll be where I am with Jon alongside me?

The Beatles usually help in these sorts of situations:

  2. Sam and I face the same difficulty in that I am I life planner while he likes to just see what happens. Sooo....we're going to have to work out a compromise eventually there. Let me know if you have any advice!

  3. Dan and I are both planners, which helps. In 10 years, I'll be 37. By then I hope we're in our "forever home" in Tennessee suburbia, with one biological child and either an adopted child or several foster children. I'll still work from home, but with unusual hours so Dan and I can homeschool the kids through the 5th grade. He'll have a job outside the home that he loves, and he'll take care of the kids/homeschool in the evenings while I'm working. Oh, and we'll also have a French live-in au pair who teaches the kids French, gets them ready in the morning, watches them 2-5:30pm, and baby-sits on occasional weekend nights for Date Night.
No, I've not put obsessive thought into this at all...
Of course, if the school system changes by then, we might not need to homeschool. At the moment, however, Dan and I don't like the Common Core, and we don't like the frequent mismanagement of educational funds.

  4. The Beatles always know how to sum it up perfectly, don't they? So appropriate! I'm a planner to a certain extent. I like to plan the next few days but when it comes to planning the next ten years? I wouldn't be able to do it!

  5. I love that you included a Beatles reference in this post. I think it totally sums up how I'd answer this prompt as well. Also fitting because I'm seeing a Beatle live tomorrow! :O

  6. I have a very clear and well thought out five year plan. It will completely change tomorrow, and the next day, and all the days after that, but right at this moment, I know what I'm going to do.

  7. I have vague notions of what I would like life to be like in 10 years but so much of that depends on what happens in the next semester of school with Fredrik for now I find it best to just focus on the present.

  8. looking through the posts that linked up, I think everyone else might have approached the prompt with slightly more levity than I started to... oops!

  9. Ha! no, I'm sure it's just something you occasionally casually think over in passing... but I like the sound of that life 😌

  10. ha! none. Jon and I promised each other that we wouldn't talk about The Future for his first six months here.

  11. yeah, who knows what could happen? Jon's job hunting in the DC area so there are so many unknowns right now. I do not deal well with unknowns. 😖

  12. Maybe it's a guy thing, because Jordan definitely isn't big on x-year plans. It's crazy hard to imagine being 39! I mean what? We're never going to be that old, right? ;)
