Dove Pure Care Dry Oil Review

photos by Sara Conklin

Raise your hand if you've ever felt like your hair is uncooperative and/or inconsistent.  You too?  Me too.  Me always, actually.  My hair has a mind of its own; I've discovered a few tricks over the past decade or so that enable me to manage somewhat, but anything can happen when I hop out of the shower after a fresh wash.

So when I was sent some Dove Pure Care Dry Oil products to try, I was more than ready for a solution - or, at the very least, some help.  Here's what Dove has to say about the line:

Dove Pure Care Dry Oil collection is ideal for all hair types and delivers five times silkier hair after just one wash
- 5x silkier hair when using the system of shampoo, conditioner and treatment vs. non-conditioning shampoo
- Nourishes hair without making it feel greasy or heavy
- Proven to absorb quickly, the dry oil features a blend of African Macadamia oil and Coconut oil

The first thing I noticed when I opened the bottles of shampoo and conditioner was the smell - a deep and rich but not overbearing smell that made me think of highly polished fine furniture.  When I got out of the shower after washing my hair with the shampoo and conditioner, I went through the usual motions: I brushed out my wet hair, flipped my head upside down, and scrunched my curls up towards my scalp with a towel.  Then I flipped back up and let my hair air dry.

Without any arrogance, let me tell you that my hair was glorious that first day after using the Dove Pure Care Dry Oil shampoo and conditioner.  I've used products before that moisturize, but none have left my curls feeling so silky.  I didn't use the Nourishing Treatment because I wanted to see how the shampoo and conditioner would work on their own, and I was beyond pleased with the result.

I almost never wash my hair two days in a row and I usually have to wear my hair up on the second day - my curls almost always dry out while I sleep and don't look healthy the next day - but the strands were still bouncy and, for the most part, frizz-free 24 hours after that first wash, so I just smoothed on some of the serum and headed off to work.  Dear readers, I can't remember the last time I didn't have to put my hair in a bun on the second day!  And, as a bonus, the Nourishing Treatment felt light and silky while I put it on but absorbed almost instantly without leaving any residue.

Sunday, the day Jon and Charlie and I went to Carderock, was a second day.  I often get nervous about doing anything more dextrous with my hair than a simple knot or ponytail because it feels so brittle on the day after a wash, but I'd been using the Dove Pure Care Dry Oil products for about a week and was optimistic.  I decided to try a Katniss-style twisted French braid to keep my hair out of my face for the hike.  And voila!  My hair, which is surprisingly fine and thin, was nourished enough not to break as I braided it, and even the little wispies that framed my face were smoother than usual.  I felt like I could take on anything I found in the arena - I mean, on the Billy Goat Trail!

Dove is encouraging you - no matter what kind of hair you have - to try Dove Pure Care Dry Oil, risk free now through December 31, 2014, and fall in love with the touch and feel of your hair. If you are not completely satisfied with the Dove Advanced Hair Series Pure Care Dry Oil system, Dove will refund your purchase (from 9/21 – 12/31). Visit hairmoneyback.com for details.

  4. Interesting. I actually want to try it now. I have curlish hair (not as curly as yours), but I straight it 90% of the time (unless it's raining.) I'm curious about it!
