Blueberry Picking

If you drive about an hour northwest of DC - through the inner suburbs, past the gaudy McMansions, and onto roads that are known by number rather than by name - you'll find yourself in the most peaceful countryside.  Mom and I ventured out there yesterday to Farm at Home, a fully functioning farm near Poolesville, to spend the morning picking blueberries.  She's been every year for the past few and takes her blueberry picking seriously; she had more than seven pounds in her bucket by the time she finished, whereas I wandered off after only a pound and a half to take photos and enjoy the murmuring of the fields.

Next weekend is the last for blueberry picking at Farm at Home, so go if you live in the DC/MD/VA area!

  1. We got so many wild blueberries from up north last year that I had to freeze them and then use them in cakes etc, delicious!

  2. I love your shoes!

Also I'm amused that your shoes are my favorite part of the post. When I first started reading, and looking at the pictures, the comment in my head was, "Betsy's mom is cool! Pretty pictures!" But then I saw your shoes, and they took priority.

  3. I got excited for a new place to explore (I'm about 60 miles NW of DC), but it's kind of far from where I am. But man, how idyllic!

  4. That looks really fun!

Here in Indiana, we get a lot of wild raspberries/blackberries, so we go and pick them, which is fun but you have to be so careful because of thorns (they're EVERYWHERE) and chiggers. We go in the heat of summer with long pants, long-sleeved shirts, gloves, and tons of bug spray!

  6. I LOVE THIS! I'm going to share about my experience this week on the blog but I think everyone should go blueberry picking at least once in their life. The blueberries are so good and I'm not gonna lie, I was roasting hot and never knew picking berries took work =). I have a new respect for farmers after that visit.

However, I am enjoying EVERYTHING blueberry in my life right now =). It's awesome. I'm glad you got to go and spend good quality time with your Mom!

  7. Looks like fun, and what a pretty place! I wanted to take the kids strawberry picking but I think it might be too late now, and then there is the potential (read: definitely happening) mess to deal with. Maybe next year!

  8. My roommate brought home a giant tub of blueberries last weekend. It definitely made me want to venture out to a farm! I think she went to Butler's Orchard?
