Frock Fridays: Gingham

Happy Friday, dear readers!  It's officially a new season, next week is the 4th of July, and this morning's early walk with Charlie was less muggy than it could have been - and, according to my friends at the Capital Weather Gang, less muggy than it will be in the days to come, so I'm feeling glorious!

You might remember that my mother is an accomplished seamstress.  She made two skirts for me this past spring, including this pink one, and is working on a dress - believe it or not, I think she's more excited about creating bespoke clothes for me than I am!  I don't want to take advantage of her skills, but I've been trying to think of a specific request for the next project since she's having so much fun.

In the spirit of summer and the garden party I'm throwing next weekend, I think I might ask Mom to make me a gingham dress.  I know I want an A-line or full skirt, no sleeves, and a proper waist at the narrowest point on my torso, but beyond that... I'm not quite sure!  I don't want to look like a tablecloth and I don't want to look like Dorothy, so what would you suggest?  I found a few gingham dresses from around the web that I do like (or that have elements that I like) and I'm trying to put together a coherent idea, but any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated!

  1. Adorable! Gingham is a fantastic print.

  2. I like the the bodice of the blue one (2nd top row), but you could do it without the cap sleeve option. The style of the skirt is fine, but for different style options I like the pink (3rd top row) or black (1st top row). I included a jpeg of a quick edit of these options so you could maybe visualize better.

  4. So, I think bottom #4 kind of looks like an apron. I like the look better of top #3.The ruffle neck of bottom #3 is cute.

  5. I'm such a fan of the collar on #1,and I love its shape. I also really like the #4 on the bottom, but I'm a sucker for that navy.

  6. I really like #2 on the top, sans the sleeves! While 3 on top and 1, 3 and 4 on the bottom are more traditional gingham prints, I do think they might look a little table-clothey. I wonder if you could find a gingham with another print on top of it--like a black and white gingham with florals or something?

  7. Top row #2 is calling my name! I don't think gingham dresses look table-clothy unless they're too full in the skirt or something. I don't know. I like gingham.

  8. I'm really drawn to the top row blue one. I think it's the little cap sleeve and the smaller check that does it.

  9. Gingham is all the rage! For me, I like the pink gingham drew on top, but I think the blue one looks super flattering!

  11. I like the spacing of the gingham in the top pink one but think the neckline might be a bit high for me...

  12. yeah, you have to look really closely to see that it actually is gingham and not just a faded blue!
