Whoo Wants To Know My Secret?

There's something that you don't know about me.  Most people don't, actually; I went though a decade-long phase of being totally embarrassed by it.  Then, once I got over that, it became hip and there's almost nothing worse than being one of those "oh, I liked it before it was cool" people and so I pretended to have no affinity for it whatsoever.

Over Thanksgiving, though, my cover was blown when my sister broke my secret to Jon.  Here goes...

I collected owls as a child.

Sarah complained good-naturedly that it was a lot easier buying me presents when I still collected owls - in fact, she admitted that to this day her first thought on seeing something owl-related is to get it for me.  I laughed it off, but then Jon surprised me with the sweetest Christmas gift, one that made me feel like he was really part of the family: a beautiful brass owl hook from Anthropologie.

Since I installed the hook in the kitchen, I've been overcome with waves of nostalgia for my owls.  I might not seek out more, but I've brought two of the bigger ones that I was given as a child to my apartment and, last time I was at my parents' house, I took pictures of some of my favorites from my collection to share with you.

I don't remember exactly which is from whom - although I suspect that my grandparents were the most generous owl givers - or when I got them, but I think that they're all going to end up making their way to my apartment one day.  After all, we're on the other side of owls being hip so it's okay, right?  And anyway, there's nothing wrong with keeping habits (or collections) formed in childhood.

  5. I love this! I collected old vintage bottles (weird) when I was young and they still stand on a shelf in my parent's kitchen. I think I loved collecting things as a child, in one old family VHS I also said I collected stones. I was obviously an odd child.

  10. This made me laugh because I collected frogs! I also don't really tell people that because I find it sort of embarrassing now. However, I do believe that owls are much more stately and can your owls seems to be much more versatile if you were to incorporate them into your decor. Bright green frogs? Not so much, so I think they'll stay in the box in my parents basement for now. :)

  13. Your owls are very classy choices for a child's collection! When I was a kid, I collected rubber ducks, and I now have a ridiculous collection of ducks in silly get-ups. It doesn't translate quite as well to adulthood as your owls. :)

  15. Gregory's grandmother collects owls and she has quite the cool collection. Me, I collect Santa Clauses, which I love, but I can only bust them out once a year otherwise I'd look like a weirdo.
