Post Black Friday Roundup

Jon and I had a heated discussion with some friends in New York over whether or not stores in the United States should be closed by federal mandate on Thanksgiving Day.  He argued that they should; however, he was raring to check out the Black Friday sales and, I think, hoping to see a tussle over electronics at a big box department store.  (Obviously, we didn't want to anyone hurt or, God forbid, killed, though that did happen elsewhere in the country again this year.)  But, honestly, everything was relatively quiet!

We both woke up early on Friday after having passed out soon after dinner the night before and snuck off to Target before most of the family had woken up.  I snagged a blue geometric-print skirt there - it was on clearance for $15 though it's now back to full-price on the website - and Jon picked up Christmas presents for one of his cousins.  (I can't tell you what he got because she reads this blog, but one of the items rhymes with Mumpkin Mie Moptarts.  Shh!)  The store was pretty empty so, disappointed that our sharpened elbows hadn't been put to use, we headed back home for breakfast with my family.

Later in the day we made our way to Montgomery Mall.  It's less exciting for Jon to go there now that there are two Westfields in London, but it's still a quintessential suburban American experience and we knew from previous experience that the parking situation would be better there than in Georgetown.  Again, we were surprised at how calm the mall was.  It felt as busy as a normal weekend day around noon, but it was totally civilized.  Maybe we got there too late for the chaos because most of the crazy sales were over by the time we arrived.  Luckily, though, I was able to slip into Ann Taylor for this tan front-pleat skirt, a white silk blouse similar to the one below, and this jewel-neck sleeveless top in deep mulberry and got in line before 12pm, which meant that I got everything for 50% off.

After that haul, Jon persuaded me we should start shopping for others, and we popped into a few more stores to pick up more Christmas gifts.  Our last stop was Gap, where I grabbed this navy braided belt  for 50% off the sale price and Jon picked up a striped jumper.  By that point we were wiped - I barely had the energy to order these coral skinnies from Old Navy when we got home!

I'm pretty proud of my restraint, if I do say so myself, and I love the pieces I bought.  They're relatively basic and I'm sure I'll wear them to death.  Check Instagram later today to see if I'm wearing any of them, okay?  Maybe you can give me styling tips...

a successful Black Friday

  1. I really need to try Old Navy pants. I have a pair of black denim from Loft but they're getting worn and I'm depressed.

  3. I have to admit, I felt proud that MA (thanks to its archaic, Puritanical laws) doesn't allow stores to open on Thanksgiving. But it's family tradition to go shopping on Black Friday and I definitely joined in! I mostly just needed a winter coat -- 50% off! -- and got a few staples at J Crew. Now for a moratorium on shopping for myself until the spring!

  5. Seems to the be trend this year! I thought it was just the rain in LA (nothing scares Angelenos more to stay at home then rain!) but talking to a friend in SF and now this, I think having the stores open on T-day made Friday much better. That said, I do think that stores should be closed on Thanksgiving.

  9. I mean... as a libertarian, I obviously don't believe in federal mandates for when stores can and cannot be open. Beau and I went out on Black Friday, but it was mainly so I could show him my southern hometown's beautifully decorated main street and our charming local shops. My mom bought us a beautiful set of four colored stemless wine glasses that she's going to put in the mail for us since they didn't fit in our carry-on bags. :D

But I do think we as consumers should choose not to shop on Thanksgiving. If we didn't go out for the ridiculous deals, the stores wouldn't open for them. Keep the ridiculous deals to Black Friday!

  10. The only place I ventured to on Black Friday was Old Navy and while I'm glad I did (as I ended up seeing one of my best friends and waiting in the check out line with with) I wish I would have purchased some things for other people! Nick got two t-shirts and I got a shirt, jeans, and socks. Glad things weren't too crazy for you!
