Jon's visit to the States for Thanksgiving was packed with family festivities, catching up with friends, and introducing him to our neighborhood, but we made sure to fit in some time for just the two of us to enjoy being together. While Jon's really good at finding romance in the mundane, I like classic dates, and my favorite adventure from his trip combined the two with a wander through the Zoo Lights.
My - our - apartment is a 10 minute walk from the back entrance to the zoo, so we strolled over on Friday evening around 7:30pm. It was the first night that the lights were on but, probably because the zoo closes at 9pm and it was absolutely freezing outside, the pathways were relatively empty. A few of the houses were open; we went through the reptile center, which inspired attempts at Parseltongue, and saw a sleeping orangutan. But the most fun was outside, where the lights were brilliant in the clear air. Jon even indulged me with a ride on the carousel! I tried to keep my phone in my pocket for most of the evening so that we could simply share our time together. With his approval, though, I did catch a few of the displays for you...
I love conservation-minded zoos, and special events at the zoo are doubly great! Looks like a perfect evening!
ReplyDeleteI love the National Zoo so much, and love that you guys got to do this!
ReplyDeleteI love Zoo Lights! My boyfriend lives near the back of the Zoo as well, so we have been a couple of times although I haven't gotten him to ride the carousel with me ... yet. :)
ReplyDeleteHow pretty!! What a cute date. It sounds like I need to do this with Nick sometime. They have lights at the zoo here as well!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful date! Looks like fun.
ReplyDeleteI love it! Beau bought me a zoo pass earlier this year, and he doesn't know it yet, but we're going to see the zoo lights on the 26th!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful lights! I'm glad you and Jon had a delightful time together. :)
ReplyDeleteI always loved the idea of going to the zoo at night, when some of the animals are more active. They had 'zoo lates' the summer I was in London but I never made it out there. Have you been?
ReplyDeletethis is incredible! I would love to see the zoo during that time!
ReplyDeleteLove this post! I did a Zoo lights post on my blog too! I can't believe I've lived in DC my whole life and never heard of Zoo Lights till this year! It was magical. Glad I wasn't the only big kid that enjoyed it this year!
