Frock Fridays: Thanksgiving Soirée

at my first soirée; November 2007

Okay, yes, Thanksgiving is a while away, but I'm excited already.  You want to know why?  Friends of mine who live just outside of New York City have an annual party on the Saturday after the holiday, and last week invitations to the legendary event pinged into Facebook accounts around the world.  The hosts are the most wonderful and generous family - they have a knack for picking up kindred spirits everywhere they go, so we're all guaranteed to become fast friends with someone we've never met before by the end of the night.

I've been lucky enough to participate in the soirée a few times since I met the family in 2007.  Jon came along in 2010, so he experienced the festive mania then, but I haven't been since - and I can't wait to head up for the evening again!  (This party is absolutely worth driving up to Manhattan with my grandparents on Saturday morning and then taking Amtrak back down on Sunday.  It's so fun that I'd suffer through Thanksgiving traffic twice, by road and by rail, to be there!)  There's always lots of singing, including a few organized pieces that are sung by a pick-up choir from amongst the younger guests, and then everything degenerates until we're hollering Christmas carols across the house and three boys are harmonizing on the one piano and, if we're lucky, someone sits down at the harp and someone else pulls out the double bass and there's joyful music everywhere.  Needless to say, the night ends with girls' shoes hiding under tables as we test the floorboards with our dancing and couches aren't claimed until the wee hours of the morning.

I'll probably wear one of two dresses I already have in my closet, but I had a little peek around Rent the Runway earlier this week just for fun and fell in love with this berry lace number.  Isn't it great?  I love the color and the lines - elegant with a punch of fun!

  11. That lace dress is such a pretty color! Just be aware, the trains get pretty packed on Thanksgiving weekend and sometimes they're delayed because of it!.
