Frock Fridays: Entrenched

Remember last week's style post, the one where I told you that I'd sort of accidentally bought myself the last 3.1 Philip Lim for Target trench coat on the rack?  I really have been trying to convince myself to return it - no thanks to Gesci and Bailie and Anne, who are total enablers - but, finally, I decided to keep it.  My main hesitation was that the $80 price tag sounds like a lot for Target.  (Doesn't it?)  But a classic trench from the Gap is $128, one with faux-leather trim is $60 at H&M, another basic option at Zara is $139, and the ones that Mango sells range from $100-190.  So, in the grand scheme of things, I guess $80 makes sense regardless of the fact that it's from a designer collaboration.

Anyway, I like how it fits; it runs big, if you're interested in buying one yourself, and I got the medium, which hasn't happened in years.  Some of the reviews on the website complain that the fabric feels hard, but I think the weight is perfect for autumn.  And that baby blue lining!  It's my favorite thing about the trench.

Temperatures have been in the mid-80s all week here in DC and the heat and sun are supposed to stick around for the weekend, so I haven't had a chance to wear the coat out yet.  When I do, though, I like the idea of pairing it with a navy dress and adding some nude flats and pearl studs - keeps things simple, you know?  I have a couple of similar pieces to these in my closet...

  1. I've been eyeing up a trench in Mango for weeks but have yet to pull the trigger - I feel like I really need something a little heavier to take me further into fall/winter.

  2. oooh I think there must be two kinds of people in the world: those who think trenches should be lighterweight and those who like them heavier! I like them to really just protect against wind and rain - there are other coats out there with my name on them for warmth! haha :)

  4. When you live in Norway, all of your coats need to consider warmth ;)

  6. That trench is great!! I haven't looked at Target because I got a trench last year for my birthday, but I agree that the baby blue trim rocks. Love the idea of the blue dress. I'm also a fan of trenches over black skinnies.

  7. So glad you kept it! I have been wearing mine with dark jeans, grey hightop converse and striped sweaters with a fluffy red scarf mainly. I would love to wear it with a skirt or dress but since I am so short it makes me look like a bit of a flasher if I do!

  9. KEEP IT! Every girl needs a classic trench. I debated buying the one at Target but in the end couldn't justify the purchase, considering I already own two (I guess if you're looking for someone to break your retail therapy habit, don't look at me).

  10. That trench is amazing, and I love the lining! Love the idea of wearing it with a dress, but that says to me cream sweater, skinny jeans, and boots. And cue the homesickness for fall and fall clothes that I've been whining about for weeks... :p

  11. Oops, sorry :) It's going to be so useful though! Never mind that it's too warm right now, you'll be wearing the thing for YEARS. And I want to pair with that bottom left dress - gorgeous.

  12. I really like the trench and it will be useable for a long time, so it's good you kept it. :) I love all of those dresses and really need at least 1 or 4 of them in my closet.

I have been wanting to purchase the navy sweater from this collection but with shipping, it gets so expensive on ebay. Lucky you decided to keep the trench, I think it will be something you'd be able to use for a long while cause I think it is a classic.

  23. I love that trench! They had many still for sale here even last week because, well... you can't get much use out of it here in Houston! Still wish I could have gotten my hands on some of the pieces.
