Wedding Wednesday: Dearly Beloved

photo from Anna and Jack's wedding in Sussex; July 6, 2013

We're four days out, dear readers!  I'm actually pretty calm, as is Jon; the freakout you heard in my vlog the other week has passed and we're both sort of just coasting on excitement and love and everyone's good wishes.

I've actually already started taking some of your advice from last week's post.  A few days ago, we discovered a detail that would be slightly wrong for the wedding but, at that point, there was nothing to be done.  And do you know what?  I handled it really well!  Even Jon was impressed at how nonchalant I was.  (Needless to say, "nonchalant" is not a word you could have used to describe my wedding planning style over the past 15 months.)  So that bodes well for the day, doesn't it?

The other suggestion I kept hearing from you was to make sure that Jon and I take some time to ourselves on Saturday amidst the chaos of the wedding.  Inspired especially by my dear friend Hannah, whose beautiful wedding was five summers ago, we'll be observing the yihud, a Jewish ritual.  It's a time immediately after the ceremony when the bride and groom withdraw to a private room to have some time alone together - yihud comes from the Hebrew word for "one," signifying the couple's union - and to bask in their new status as husband and wife without family, friends, or cameras around.  I'm really looking forward to this!

Unsurprisingly, my mother had similar words of wisdom for our wedding say.  Here's what she emailed:

My only advice is: although you spent a lot of time and energy planning the event,
don’t sweat the small stuff and remember that this is really about getting married

That I can do!  Thank you, Mom.  And thank you friends!  A few of you said you were interested in linking up with what you've learned from your own wedding day or from weddings you've attended, and I can't wait to see what you have written for your Wedding Wednesday posts today.  (If I were to write one based on the last wedding Jon and I went to, I'd tell you to make sure you get a bacon butty at the end of the night before they're all gone!)  So much love to all of you for sharing this journey with us - I really do feel like you'll be there at Bruisyard in spirit on Saturday!

Congrats that your wedding is almost here! I feel like we planned our weddings during mostly the same time and have enjoyed reading about how the process was going for you! Best wishes for a beautiful wedding day!

  2. I like your mom's advice. At the end of the day, it really is just about getting married! It's all too easy to forget that sometimes in all of the frenzy, but really this is a day of union and love. I'm so excited for you! Enjoy your wedding!!!!

  3. I'm so excited for you. We almost have the same wedding day, although ours was the 25th. Just remember to take deep breaths and just enjoy the excitement. My face hurt from smiling so much, and that's what I like remembering.

  10. I say you've done it right so far: obsess and freak out until the last few days, then sit back, que sera, sera/hakuna matata/etc. and just enjoy it. Because even if something goes wrong or isn't the way it's supposed to be, as long as you and Jon are right and the way you're supposed to be (in lurve), then it's just going to be wonderful.

Besides, the best wedding stories include some sort of momentary disaster. And at least y'all won't fall in a lake. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RStjYH2iJM4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUgQCrQ1Czo

  11. So exciting! I linked up a post of mine from last month about why we chose to do the bride and groom "first look." Obviously I realize it's too late to change anything like that now, but it was interesting to hear other people talk about why they chose to do it one way or another. Yes, not sweating the small stuff is what you need to do. Because no one will remember exactly what it looked like or what happened, but they will remember if you're all stressed out. So just have fun! At the end of the day, you'll be married, and that's what counts.

  23. I was coming over from Twitter to get to know you better and I see congratulations are in order!! I wish you beautiful weather and a ceremony without any hitches! I think the practice of yihud is something all newlyweds should engage in. I don't think I truly talked to my husband after our ceremony until we were in the car on the way to our honeymoon. How's that for romantic? ;o) Happy wedding day!!

  24. Ha! Whatever you decide is perfect for the two of you :)

  26. Oh my goodness, 4 days!!! I'm so excited for you guys.

I think my advice for the day is just to look around and soak up all of the love there is that day. All of these people are there for YOU. They took the time off from their lives, spent the money on getting there (some from across the ocean for you guys), and they came there to support you and celebrate your love. That right there was one of my favorite things from our day. SO MUCH LOVE!!! I swear I was high from it all day.

Also, I don't know if you watch The Office? But on Jim and Pam's wedding day, they made it a point to take mental pictures of moments they loved. Do that. Stop and say "I want to remember this" and then you will. One of my favorite memories is from when I was talking to a family member or something and I looked over and caught Ben staring at me.I purposefully took a picture in my mind and I still remember the stupid happy grin that was on his adorable face.
