Friday Favorites

Good morning, dear readers!  I wasn't originally planning on posting today, but I woke up early and couldn't go back to bed so here we are.  It's the perfect opportunity to share all the fun links and bits of news and pieces of my mind that have been swirling around recently - ready?

It often takes a lot of editing before I'm happy with my posts on religion, especially those in which I critique the consequences thereof, so I totally appreciated tips on How To Be An Atheist Without Being A Dick About It.

It turns out there's no such thing as "hookup culture."  Who knew?

Kate blogged some advice for her children, but she's got wisdom in there that we can all use no matter how old we are.

We all say we know that texting while driving is bad, but so many of us do it anyway.  Don't.  It is a big deal.  It is life.  It can wait.

Have you ever achieved the holy trinity of perfectness when taking a photo?

I don't have a lot of time for new-to-me blogs that focus on fashion, but I've got a huge crush on Elizabeth from Delightfully Tacky.  Fab outfits, great writing, and a personality that shines through every post - I've got a lot to learn from this girl!  (That's her up there at the top of this post, by the way; is that weird?  Sorry.)

Russia's legalized homophobia is terrifying and heartbreaking and the country's response to international outrage has been unsurprisingly disappointing.  I hate it when people pull the Holocaust card, but, as Stephen Fry wrote in a letter to the IOC, the situation does seem tragically reminiscent of Berlin in 1936.

A Practical Wedding is one of my favorite wedding blogs - I stopped browsing most months ago because I just couldn't handle any more pressure from the Wedding Industrial Complex, but still click onto APW regularly.  Articles like this, crucial to read when starting the process, and this, incredibly comforting as the day nears, and are why.

Speaking of weddings, look how great the weather will be for my first week in England!  I fly out tomorrow night and arrive on Sunday morning; Jon's working Monday-Wednesday, so I get those days to see friends I won't be able to catch up with properly at the wedding, deal with last-minute details that are easier to take care of while in the relevant timezone, and (hopefully) decompress before the delightful chaos of our wedding weekend.  Jon and I will take the train to Suffolk on Wednesday night; we'll be near Aldeburgh with his family on Thursday and Friday and then my family will join us on Friday afternoon when we head to Bruisyard Hall.  The wedding is on Saturday evening, we're hosting a joint family barbecue on Sunday, and on Monday my family returns to the US and Jon and I drive to Norfork for our staycation honeymoon!

I'm not sure what my blogging schedule will be like over the next two weeks because I'm committed to being in the moment while I'm in England (though I might end up having tons o' downtime to write posts when Jon's at work early next week) but I'm delighted by your responses to my Wedding Wednesday post!  We'll definitely do the wedding advice link-up next Wednesday and it will go live at 7am BST.  I hope you'll participate!  You guys are the best at this sort of thing.  And, as my contribution to the link-up, I'll have a very special guest blogger sharing her thoughts on marriage here on Betsy Transatlantically!

In the meantime, dear readers, I hope you have a lovely weekend.  Hi ho as we head into the end of August!

  1. Elizabeth is just so cute and I love her style! I will definitely be checking out that photography post, asap. I, too, have stopped reading wedding blogs because I don't want to find some other idea that is simply just not feasible at this point in time!!

  3. I can't believe you're getting married in a week!! I feel like I've been "with" you through this whole planning, and now it's here. I'll miss your posts, but obviously totally understandable. You kind of have some important things happening.

I can't wait to hear more about it, and I hope you enjoy every second. No matter what happens or what you choose in the planning, it's YOUR day and that's all that matters. So happy for you!

  5. I've been horrified by the recent (and not so recent) happenings in Russia regarding LGBT peoples and it saddens and shocks me that more isn't being done on an international level. Before reading that letter, I hadn't drawn the comparisons to the Berlin Olympics and now that the connection has been made, I quite literally feel scared for those in Russia and very much hope that the rest of the world takes a stronger stance much earlier this time around.
