Wedding Wednesday: Morning Suits

There are so many fun things about getting married in England - our venue is a 14th century manor house, the women can wear hats and fascinators if they want, and we've been promised that at least one of our guests is going to turn up in a kilt.  (We may even have a relative bringing his bagpipes... more on this as the story unfolds, dear readers!)  But the thing I'm most excited about is that Jon, his best men, and our fathers will be wearing morning suits.

Believe it or not, this was Jon's idea!  I had thought we'd be going a less formal route - just suits, probably - but it turns out that my fiancĂ© has a lovely old fashioned side to him that appears in traditional moments.  Our ceremony is in the afternoon, so it wouldn't be appropriate for the boys to wear dinner jackets (the British version of tuxedos) which are only for evening events.

My future mother-in-law and I both think that black is a bit funereal so Jon wisely decided to choose a charcoal morning coat, the waistcoats will probably be a lighter shade of gray, and I'm not sure what the plan is for the ties.  When my parents and I fly over in mid-April, the boys will all go to be fitted and they'll pick something then; I've been told that I'm not allowed to go with them to the appointment at Moss.

To be totally honest, it's hard for me to let go of this piece in our wedding puzzle because - well, because I'm a total control freak.  But I think that morning suits are romantic and elegant and, since it's such a part of Jon's culture, I have promised to trust him!  (However, I am beyond grateful that he let me veto top hats, which I think can possibly sometimes tip it all into costume territory...)

Look at these handsome men!  And of course I had to include a still from the Downton wedding below as well as a photo (above) from a wedding that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended in 2010.  I might swoon.  What do you think - can you imagine walking down the aisle towards the love of your life wearing a morning suit?

  8. Mmmm, I don't know how I feel about those. Perhaps because I'm not in England, and over here in SA we are just not used to suits like these... still a nice suit though

  9. fair enough - they did look like a fancy dress outfit when I first saw them, but they've grown on me! guess it depends a bit on what we're used to?
