Frock Fridays: Sweater Season

After last week's glamorous and expensive outfit, I felt we needed to come back to reality a bit for Frock Fridays today.  Getting dressed up is tons o' fun, but, as a few comments noted, it doesn't happen too often.  It's more likely that you'll catch me playing homebody in the evenings - because of Charlie, my transatlantic relationship, and my savings account, I try to only hit the town for special occasions.  So let's see what something a bit more practical might look like, shall we?

Years and years ago, a boy I knew who rowed told me that spandex was a privilege, not a right.  (Yes, this came up as we were talking about a girl on the crew team; yes, we were being bitchy.  Sorry.  It was high school.)  Because of that, the only times I wear leggings in public are when I'm running or going to the gym.  In fact, I think that for 89% of women, "leggings are not pants" should be the first thing they think when they get dressed in the morning.  (My sister, obviously, is in the 11% to whom this rule does not apply.  Wait, I'm sorry - did I say my sister?  I meant KMid.  Duh.)  But it's gotten cold enough out that I don't want to change into a casual jersey dress when I get home from work - I want to wear something comfortable and cozy.

So I think I might let myself recreationally slip into leggings now and then - as long as I follow a few guidelines, of course.  Number one: I can only leave the house in leggings if I'm taking Charlie for a walk.  Number two: the leggings cannot even approach transparency.  Number three: the hem of my top has to hit at least mid-thigh.

Even with all that, I think I'd be most comfortable keeping my leggings around the house.  Add a long sweater and some knitted booties, plus a mug of tea, a wool blanket, and a DVD box set, and you've got the makings of my ideal evening.  (By the way, the total for this outfit is $88.  That's more like it!)

  1. This outfit looks amazingly comfy and I want it now! Love the mug haha.
P.S The amount of times I want to secretly shout at girls "leggings are not trousers!!". Although it is probably just secret jealously that I am not in the 11%.

  2. I'm probably the president of the 89% club! Leggings are not pants!!!! I saw some teeny boppers in town yesterday and I could fully see their knickers through their leggings. And they were probably not even old enough to spell knickers! I wanted to shout at them!!!
Getting back to the topic at hand, really love the outfit. Especially because the sweater is long enough to appropriately wear leggings with (omg I'm really sorry for sounding like a mom. yikes.) And it looks comfy! And of course, love the mug, especially if it has pg tips in it!

  4. oh man - I haven't seen it as bad in the States as in England. I DO NOT WANT TO KNOW THAT YOU ARE WEARING BLUE UNDIES WITH PINK HEARTS UNDER YOUR LEGGINGS. inappropriate. Mom hat very firmly in place :)

  6. I definitely wouldn't wear leggings as pants out and about in public, but they sure are amazing at home!! Those booties are adorable too. And West Wing? LOVE IT. Hubby is introducing me to it now!

  7. I'm with you on the leggings. Perfect for at home/walking the dogs, otherwise? Nope. Not unless they're under a knee-length dress in the winter. (I prefer leggings to tights; my feet get claustrophobic!)
Also, I bought slippers that looked like those at M&S right before we left- and then, after putting them on at home, realized the label was wrong and they were a size too small. Perfect as a gift for my slipper-loving mom, but I needed new ones. I went back, and of course that style's sold out. BOOOOOOO. They're so cozy...

  8. What about the little trollops running around in CONTROL TOP tights with a waist-length shirt on?!?!?!! ACK! And yeah, in Harrogate I saw navy stripes underneath, aqua solid underneath, pink... I wanted to carry around blankets to hand out "Honey, it appears your pants have fallen off. Let me cover you!"

  12. I think I live by very similar rules when it comes to leggings! It really upsets me when I see people wearing them as trousers.....It makes me want to go and educate them about the benefits and downsides of leggings. Love the union jack mug btw. It would be perfect for my expat kitchen!

  13. Haha! This is funny. I wear leggings out sometimes, but my bum must be covered. No bum shots. I mean, Hell. I don't like to wear midriff-baring things or tight things, because they make me feel BIG, so leggings with no bum coverage is never an option. And it shouldn't be for anyone who isn't working out or dancing. :) And you are correct. Leggings should not be sheer. If they're sheer, they're TIGHTS. Not the same thing.

  18. I totally agree with you about leggings! I know that i can't wear them like other girls can, and I am TOTALLY okay with that. I have started branching out a bit and trying it here and there - same rules apply, though. Leggings MUST cover the butt - even when lifting your arms :)

  19. I completely agree about your legging rules, and I LOVE that the West Wing complete series made it into this picture :)

i kind of agree with the leggings thing. i only ever wear then if my top is past my but. they are not allowed to act as true pants but more like tights and they are NEVER appropriate for work (unless you teach yoga.)
