Wedding Wednesday: Hurricanes Hardly Happen

Sandy, the epic hurricane that battered the East Coast earlier this week, didn't do much to us.  Our garden is flooded and there are a few branches on the ground, but we never lost power or were truly freaked out by the elements.  (I guess that someone decided we needed a break after the summer derecho...) My heart and prayers go out to everyone who was seriously affected by the storm, but I do have to admit that, at least on our little patch of land, things don't look too different from Jon's parents' house/yard after a few normal gross English spring days.

So, yesterday, I thought about that - and then Dad and I started singing and one thing led to another and wham I had a blog post!

(If you're curious, the song was The Rain in Spain from My Fair Lady and the lightbulb line was "in Hartford, Hereford, or Hampshire / hurricanes hardly happen.")

Let's review the facts:

1. I am getting married in Suffolk.
2. The average for August in East Anglia is 8.3 days and 55.8mm of rain.
3. Central England has recorded the following levels of rainfall on annually on Aug. 24:

Technically, August is one of the driest months in England.  However, from the above information, I think it's safe to assume that we have a good chance of gray skies at the very least on our wedding day.  So let's talk about contingency plans!

Our wedding is primarily indoors, so we actually won't be too affected even if it ends up bucketing down.  We are hoping to have our cocktail hour outside in a courtyard; if it's just cloudy or threatening, we should be fine.  A marquee (or, in American, a tent) to cover the space isn't an option if we want to stay within budget (unless someone feels like giving us a spare £400 - anyone?) so if it does really rain we'll have to stay inside.  There's enough space in the Brusiyard Hall Barn that, if we rearrange things, the cocktail bit of the reception can be accommodated inside - at least, I hope there is!

We will have to seriously rethink how we'll do our photos, though.  Our venue is stunning and the grounds are beautiful, too, so we were planning on doing most of the portraiture and family shots outside.  But I have total faith that Tarah will come up with a ton of creative ideas if that doesn't work out.  There are bits of the Hall from each of the last five centuries, each with their own character and charm, so I know we'll get some great pictures even if we have to be primarily indoors.  And if we insist on a few shots in the rain?  Well, that's what wellies and umbrellas are for!

I've heard good things about this umbrella-hire company, so it might be worth looking into that just to get our guests into the barn intact.  But other than that, rain isn't the worst thing - I bet we'll have tons of fun staying dry inside!  Actually, now that I think about it, eating and drinking and dancing and making merry in a warm, twinkling, timbered barn bedecked with flowers and greenery sounds lovely.  Bring it on, England!

  2. Rain on your wedding day is indeed good luck! Rain is a bringer-er of life, we couldn't live or grow our food without water. Also, they say that a wet knot is more difficult to untie than a dry one.

i wouldn't worry too much about it - you can't control it. i kind of love the umbrella wedding pictures. besides, cloudy skies can be really cool in pictures.

i had a destination wedding and it was at 3 pm. I originally wanted 4 pm but that was already booked.

Well, the day of the wedding, while we were getting our hair done, it started to pour. like torrential downpour. Everyone else was trying to calm me down but they were freaked out and I wasn't - I just KNEW it would stop for some reason.

And it did. And I got my 4 pm time since everyone got pushed back. And I got the most beautiful sunset pictures. I am glad it rained.

  4. That umbrella hire thing is the best idea ever. If you can afford it, I'd totally go for it.

Also, it rained on our wedding day. It was 95 degrees and humid all morning/through the ceremony/pictures/beginning of reception and then it started POURING right after dinner and we went out and danced in it. It was the best thing ever.

  5. If you end up finding unique ways to take pictures indoors please pass the info along. We're getting married in the winter which means the sun sets during our ceremony. Which on one hand is absolutely awesome for the ceremony but on the other hand makes it tough for pictures afterwards especially since we're staying traditional and aren't seeing each other before.

  9. we're not doing a First Look, either, so the time of sunset is definitely something we'll have to keep in mind, too, even though it's summer. I think that having a great photographer who knows light is key.

  11. I absolutely love the fact that you quoted my favorite movie in your title :) I love rain on a wedding day. It's so fun and nontraditional. Sure it makes things a little difficult, but it makes for great memories!

  12. It's always SO important to have a contingency plan, so I'm happy to hear that you're already thinking of it! You can definitely do some great pictures outside with umbrellas (which I think is just adorable), and it is good luck! xoxo

  13. I'm going to have an October wedding. I wanted it to be outside in Northern Michigan but it's always so cold here by then... I don't want to be cold while I'm getting married so I guess it will have to be indoors and then we can take the photos where I wanted to be married. I initially wanted to be married in the UK, but then I found out that you can't be married just anywhere like in the US.. so it's going to be here. It will probably rain on our wedding day too... which will be fine.

I also wanted to stop by and let you know I nominated you for the Liebster Award going around! You have a fantastic blog and definitely deserve the recognition!

  18. We had a huge tropical storm on our wedding day and I was really annoyed about it at the time but now I think it was just another thing that made our wedding memorable.
