13 Going on 30

Okay, this is an awkward post for a couple of reasons.  One: it's Thursday, which means that we can't call it Frock Fridays.  And two: somehow, I went back in time to middle school as I put this outfit together while, concurrently, feeling terribly old.  Why the schizophrenia, you ask? I'll tell you.

While I was at college, I nannied for two wonderful girls.  Rachel and Julia were 6 and 7 years old, respectively, when I started babysitting them, and over the next three years I felt like I became part of their family.  After I graduated, their mother and I would try to arrange a visit every time I went back to New York - it's been such a joy to watch them grow up.

Except that now they actually are grown up.  I'm heading to Manhattan tomorrow morning to attend Rachel's Bat Mitzvah.  Dear readers, I am not ready for her to be 13!  She's still supposed to be in elementary school, painting her nails purple and refusing to practice piano and asking me to read the Narnia books to her.  Back then, she thought I was the coolest ever.  I mean, ever.  So I ask you:

What does a 20-something wear to a morning service and then to an evening party when she wants a 13 year old to think she's still the coolest?

I've packed my short trip full, which means I might be running around between the two events with no time for a real outfit change, so I need to be wearing something versatile - something that is solemn enough for temple but that can be glammed up for the celebrations.  All I'll need to do is switch from the tweed blazer into the sequins, and I'll be ready to bop along to Bieber with the best of them.

Okay, maybe the clothes won't make me look cool.  But the Kate Spade gift I'm bringing should work some magic!  Right?  Of course right.
bat mitzvah

(For the record, my mom thinks I'm ridiculous to worry about this.  You know what I said to her?  "Ugh, Mom - whatever.  You never understand."  See?  I'll fit in perfectly with a bunch of teenagers.)

  1. I love the sequins! I babysat for the same family in DC in college when their oldest son was 9 months until I moved away, 8 years later, and they had another son at that time. I went to the oldest son's bar mitzvah when I was pregnant with Finn, and they came to my wedding. He is graduating from high school this year. It is amazing to see these little people become teenagers and grow up! Have fun!

  3. I love everything about this outfit! I've never been to a bat mitzvah so I'm not sure what you would wear, but this seems to be pretty cute. The color of that skirt is adorable!

  6. I know! It's much more fun than anything I wore at my friends' Bat/Bar Mitzvot, but then again I'm much more confident about my body now than I was all those years ago. thank you :)

  7. It really is! I think it is so fabulous to stay in touch, those girls will love it! I drew the line on FB though, I just couldn't be friends with someone I babysat on FB :)

  10. I totally know how you're feeling. I used to work at a summer camp and now my "little campers" are in high school!!! But whenever I see them I always try and look cool, even though THEY should be trying to impress me, because I have enough embarrassing stories about them for blackmail if need be :)
I love everything about this outfit, especially the glitter!!!
