It's funny, because when I think of a honeymoon I imagine something straight out of a Sandals advertisement. This will be the polar opposite of that, and it will be exactly what we'll need as a pause between our transatlantic engagement and the first few long-distance months of our marriage. We'll have a few days to just be together, to recharge after our wedding and before dealing with Jon's visa.
We will get an exotic beach holiday over Christmas - more on that down the road - but it won't actually be our first. Jon's family went to Thailand in the summer of 2009, and I was able to take time off from nannying and writing my dissertation to join them for a week of sailing around the islands in the Gulf of Thailand. We'd been dating for nine months at that point, I was comfortable around his parents and sister, and we'd shared a vacation to Istanbul the April before - things were serious and I was confident in our relationship, but we knew we'd soon be facing our first long-distance period, so it was definitely a special trip.
I didn't blog back then, so I don't think you've seen any of these photos... enjoy, dear readers!

It looks absolutely heavenly! xx
ReplyDeleteLook how tanned you were Betsy!
ReplyDeleteI am so desperate to get to Thailand! I've heard that it is beyond wonderful
ReplyDeleteLooks amazing!
ReplyDeleteSO TAN AND SO SLIM! one day again :)
ReplyDeleteYou look SO young and tan and Jon has SO MUCH HAIR!!
ReplyDeleteuhh... I mean, you don't look old now... or pale... crap ;)
Quiet holidays before long separations are perfect. Absolutely perfect. EIther you soak up and store loving time together or you get so annoyed being in each others' face all the time that you're less upset about the separation. Or is that just us?!
But seriously I'm jealous! I want to go to Thailand. And if I were to return as tan as you are here (yeahrightnevergonnahappen) it'd be icing on the cake!
he could get away with the hair then - he was a poor starving English student in a garrett, reading romantic poetry and writing on the injustices of colonial literature!
ReplyDelete(and no, that is not just you. it is definitely also us! haha)
you look like a baby! and Jon looks strangely the same, just with longer hair...I guess that's a good sign for the years to come? ;)
ReplyDeletehaha do I really? I guess it WAS four years ago... but Jon will be pleased to hear he hasn't aged at all :P
ReplyDelete(that hairstyle, however, is NOT coming back!)
You look so tan! Holy moly! I definitely like Jon with the shorter hair. :P What a beautiful trip!
ReplyDeleteSo jealous! Thailand is very high on my travel list. I just want to go and EAT. :) Also, you are ridiculously tan in these pictures.
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful! I have recently added Thailand to my places to visit one day after having read some amazing things about it. And you're such a bronze beauty in these photos! ;) And that water! Ahhh-- so blue!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos! And that honeymoon plan sounds amazing. It's definitely important to have some nice quality time together before dealing with the stressful stuff.
ReplyDeleteI am dying to go to thailand! this looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteLove the photos... you're so tan! :) Funny enough, I think it may also work out that Jurgen and I have to postpone our honeymoon. Depending on when the official date is, we'll also have just a few days for a local trip before returning back to real life for several months. And I'm ok with that. I'm sure you guys will have a wonderful time regardless of where you are since you'll be together... and married!

ReplyDeletehaha thank you - I guess I tan more easily than I thought!
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize how tan I was until I got back - colors are different on the water, I guess!
ReplyDeleteoh YES respite is exactly the word :)
ReplyDeleteam I the only one who feels pressured to make the most of big holidays? this will be low-key and perfect - like yours will be, it sounds like!
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to go to Thailand! The closest I have gotten is a three hour stopover in the airport at Bangkok!
ReplyDeleteI love these pictures, Betsy! I've never been to Thailand, but it looks just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteFabulous pictures! And your honeymoon sounds perfect :)
ReplyDeleteThis is too funny.. My husband and I were planning to goto Ireland next year. Why did you wind up changing your mind?
ReplyDeleteYou're so amazingly tanned! Wowza!!
ReplyDeleteIt was gorgeous! I didn't see any of the mainland (except the Bangkok airport...) but I'd love to go back :)
ReplyDeleteThe house we were going to stay at in Ireland is already claimed at that time! We really did want to go - we'll have to make another trip :) It's a beautiful country!
ReplyDeleteWe're currently planning our honeymoon, over a year after we got married. International life hey?!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog. The lamp is gorgeous, but I have no idea how much it cost. I knew it was way out of my price range though!
The photo of you, tanned in the red dress under that night sky is BEAUTIFUL!
ReplyDeleteThailand! We had a great time when we were there a few years ago, and I would love to go back. That sounds fun to sail around between the islands. Oh, the beaches. The beaches. Simply beautiful. :)
ReplyDeleteYou both are just adorable! I love that pink dress. How fun to go back and share old photographs from travels. Norfolk holds a special place in my heart as I lived there as a young girl growing up during the first gulf war. Sounds like a perfect place for your honeymoon for what you both need! Thank you for linking up with Belinda and I for Travel Tuesday!

Looks like you had an amazing trip!! I love Thailand. You just don't see warm blue waters like that anywhere else. As for the honeymoon getaway you guys have planned, it's perfect - it's away from everyone and a place where you can decompress and just be YOU! Love it!
