Frock Fridays: Caped Crusaders

A few weekends ago, I told my sister that Mom is making me a cape.  Here's her response:

But, actually, capes are supercool.  Mom made herself one last winter, and I got tons o' compliments when I borrowed it the other day.  And tell me that I'm not jumping on an awesome bandwagon after you've checked out these trendsetters - one, two, and three.

So, last weekend, Mom and I went to G Street Fabrics and picked out a gorgeous navy wool/cashmere blend to use for my cape; we also looked at buttons and trim, but we'll decide about the specifics later.  I really like double-breasted gold buttons in a kind of military style (maybe like this one) but researching options is so much fun!  Here are a few of my favorites...

What do you think, dear readers?  Have you ever worn a cape?  How can I pull it off without looking like I'm in costume?  And which style do you like best?  Any and all advice very much appreciated!

  2. LOL I'm dying at your sisters comment. It reminds me of when my friends make fun of me for what I wear (my best friend said my oxford shoes looked like I was going tap dancing with grandma........)

In love with the peacoat cape!!! And the color of it!

  3. I know I absolusutely would not be able to pull it off, I don't think it would suit my body shape. BUT whenever I see someone wearing one, I always think it looks super stylish, I think it will look great! I like the peacoat one, very similar to this Blair Waldorf one http://pinterest.com/pin/101401429080223497/ Love it.

  5. oh man that's GORGEOUS! I think that a lot of the fit issues have to do with where the hem hits?

  13. I am really digging the ruffled cape, its very girly, yet sophisticated. I don't know if I could ever pull off a cape but they are pretty cool.

  15. I think my favorite style is the peacoat cape - Blair wore one on Gossip Girl at some point and managed to look really cute. I'm not sure if I'm really a cape person, personally - I think they can look really cute depending on how they're being styled, but all the same I'll probably just stick to jackets. they're easy. :)

  17. Not sure on capes, by my fashionista sister LOVES ponchos, which have a similar shape. She was wearing my mom's from the 70's before they exploded in popularity a few years ago, at least out west. Maybe you can do the same for capes on the eastside!

  19. hahah love that text exchange. i'm drawn to the minimalist cape - it's modern, with clean lines and you can dress it up or down.

  22. How did I miss this post yesterday?? Anyway, I love it. I want a cape. I want ALL THE CAPES. The sweater and classic are the styles I gravitate towards; the belt of luxury and ruffled are cute and comfy, but perhaps a little house-roby in my vein of non-classiness. But yes. ALL THE CAPES. And I will swoop them when I need a dramatic departure. The lady version of "I said GOOD DAY!"
